Intensive Outpatient Program
At Drew Edmund Psychiatric Centers, an IOP program is fluid. The emphasis is not on administering standardized modalities of treatment or prescribing from a set of psychological assumptions. Instead, it’s one that employs whatever modality is most useful to the individual and the group at any given moment. If residential treatment and continuing care were thought of as stepping stones across a deep pond, then the intensive outpatient program (IOP treatment center) would represent the final step towards solid ground.
OUR IOP TREATMENT CENTER INCLUDES:
- Three group therapy sessions per day, held Monday through Friday
- Individual therapy sessions
- Individual case management sessions
- Specialized group sessions, with topics including but not limited to trauma, grief and loss, life skills, body image, codependency, mindfulness, dual diagnosis and meditation, and stress management
- Pre-admission evaluation, assessment, and customized treatment planning
- Random drug and alcohol testing might occur
- Individualized treatment planning
- If you are an addict, introduction to 12-step programs and meetings
- Family therapy program and weekly support groups
- Medication management and consultation
- Career and education counseling
Whenever necessary, clients may enroll for additional time and still work on continuing to move their recovery process forward. As each person begins the process of integration into a self-supporting daily routine the IOP treatment center still helps clients. Personal challenges receive clinical support and the staff shares personal recovery experiences. Clients can truly begin to become independent as local resources are readily available. Our location in Vista, California is near educational resources, vocational schools, and other supportive services. We are also close to bus lines and grocery stores.
By the time clients leave they have the tools to manage a daily recovery routine as fully independent recovering people.

The primary treatment objectives during IOP address the transitional needs of clients suffering from delusions, psychosis, depression, obsessive thinking, anxiety, alcoholism, drug addiction or substance abuse. Wherever possible, treatment coordinates in clinical continuity with referring professionals.
CLINICAL BENEFITS OF AN IOP TREATMENT CENTER
During IOP the clinical team supports clients processing feelings and emotions that surround the transition from alcohol and drug rehab. IOP also helps to implement a supportive network of services for solving the triggers of an independent daily living routine. This tactic allows the therapists and staff to engage clients wherever they are on the recovery spectrum. No standard approach is as effective at reaching patients in their 3rd, 4th, or 5th months of recovery, as protocols that flow organically from the individual and the group. This is an observation which also applies to alumni with accrued years of sobriety under their belts.
Even these people, former clients, and alumni who are in their 2nd or 3rd years of recovery, participate in the outpatient program, because of its inherent clinical benefits. Additionally, a sense of camaraderie pervades intensive outpatient program participants more strongly than the bonds shared between those participating in our other aftercare programs.
As a final word on Drew Edmund Psychiatric Centers intensive outpatient program, it is significant to note that the majority of care provided inevitably revolves around the unresolved and continuing issues generated around family of origin, genetics or addiction. When confronting two distinct sets of issues such as Bipolar and Addiction, or issues that overlap symptomatically but whose origins are separate, outpatient care is indispensable. When applied correctly, it strives to include every foreseeable problem-area as well as any unforeseen occurrences that might hinder a safer transition out of inpatient treatment. Assessments of each person create a comprehensive plan best suited to a person’s specific circumstances.
AN IOP TREATMENT CENTER IS ALL ABOUT TRANSITIONS
The extended care program provides transitional support for a variety of individual circumstances as well as for a variety of different levels of commitment to the recovery process. As a component of enrollment in an intensive outpatient program, the clinical team assesses each client to determine what risk factors play a role in their maintaining sustained recovery success. Once these risk factors have been identified a personalized treatment plan is developed to assist each client in furthering their commitment to recovery.
Additionally, individual life-goals based on personal passions and interests outline a plan of action for achieving these goals. Vocational and educational placement is a component of the Drew Edmund Psychiatric extended care program. Our location and relationships with local colleges and sober employers ease the difficulty of enrollment and/or hiring. They also help instill a sense of purpose on the pathway to recovery. From this phase of treatment, a foundation into self-supporting recovery is actualized.

Treating psychological disorders and co-occurring substance abuse
At Drew Edmund Psychiatric we provide the highest level of 24-hour care for residents challenged by mental, emotional and personality disorders. Whether you are struggling with psychological issues, medication changes or the added complication of co-occurring substance abuse (dual diagnosis), Affinity is able to structure a therapeutic program that will help you achieve stabilization and a better quality of life.
Our first step is to evaluate what medications and therapies have been used in the past and why they were ineffective. We have found that many patients have been on appropriate medications but were not on a therapeutic dose. They were unable to achieve stabilization and relief of their symptoms due to lack of knowledge by the prescribing clinician. Our psychiatrists understand that achieving a therapeutic dosage is pivotal to the success of a patient’s treatment program. They also understand that not every medication works for every individual. At Drew Edmund Psychiatric we have carefully chosen expert psychopharmacologists to administer our psychiatric services to ensure the best overall results for our patients.
Our staff at Drew Edmund Psychiatric is dedicated to improving the lives of individuals diagnosed with:
It is our goal at Drew Edmund Psychiatric Centers is to facilitate the resident in learning appropriate and productive ways to fill their free time. They must learn this basic skill if they are to function in the real world.
Because we employ an efficient staff of mental health experts and utilize and administer a wide scope of the latest therapies, we are able to quickly and effectively assess and respond to our residents needs. Drew Edmund Psychiatric Centers is committed to not engage our residents in “busy activities” that have proven to be ineffective.
Because of our assessments, it is possible to provide extremely affordable, personalized care that is essential to their progress and stabilization. Activities that other programs offer to fill their programming schedule such as “daily reflections,” community meetings, program overview, personal meditation and written work make the program sound busy. However, the cost of staff necessary to run these programs hardly justifies their use in light of what the resident might actually gain from them. We make it a point not to “over-program” our residents.
